Mixing & Mastering Tip #216 ·

Why I refuse to mix or master without a demo mix from the client

Are you still getting a ton of revisions from your clients? I did too, until I understood one simple thing.

If you send me a track to mix or master, you will always hear the same sentences from me or my assistant Alex: “Please send me the demo!”, “Send me your raw or limited mix!” or similar.

Why is this so important? Because it’s one of those things that can literally save you hours of revisions, give you a clear intention and direction, and protect your sanity.

I’m not here to invent a new song

The job of a mixing or mastering engineer is simple: take the artist’s vision and enhance it.

Not to change the idea. Not to reinvent the wheel. Not to turn your indie ballad into a techno banger.

A reference explains your vision of the song. This is the key.

Your demo, your raw mix, even your messy bounce shows me the intention, your vibe, your personal taste and the direction you want to go. And this is everything.

Without a reference, I am guessing. I can make it sound the way that feels good to me, but that doesn’t necessarily mean our visions will align.

Guessing kills the groove. Guessing moves things to a different place. Guessing makes the mix feel like a stranger to your original idea, and I speak from experience here.

This is why you are still getting a ton of revisions: you are not listening to what your client wants.

The demo is a light in the dark

It’s truly like a lighthouse guiding sailors.

With your demo, I can read your vibe, volumes, the position of your main elements, vocal placement and character. Everything has a code. And with experience, an engineer learns to read those codes like a map.

From there, we can decide:

  • What to keep
  • What to enhance
  • What to clean
  • What to give a tiny twist with technical knowledge

The result is a mix that keeps the original vibe but sounds much better. You keep your identity, I add the polish. The song comes out sounding great, and revisions become minimal.
