How I use Eventide Invigorate on vocals, drums and the mixbus

I love plugins that add energy without completely destroying the source. Lately, one of those has been Invigorate by Eventide Audio.

What’s cool about it is that it’s not really just a compressor. It’s not really just a saturator. And it’s definitely not just a limiter. It’s kind of all of them at the same time.

Eventide Newfangled Audio Invigorate with the Radar Control between compress, limit and overdrive

The whole idea behind Invigorate is that you can move smoothly between compression, limiting and distortion with one main control. The plugin calls it the Radar Control, and honestly, that’s where the magic happens.

The places I use it most:

  • Vocals
  • Drums
  • Mixbus (very lightly)

On vocals

This is probably where I use Invigorate the most.

Sometimes a vocal is technically good, but it still feels a little “soft”. That’s where Invigorate comes in. The vocal starts feeling more forward, more present and more expensive without sounding obviously processed.

One thing I really love is that you can blend everything back with the huge Mix knob. So instead of committing to 100% of the effect, you can sneak in just enough character.

On drums

This plugin was made for drums. Seriously.

If your drum bus feels flat or disconnected, Invigorate can add a crazy amount of excitement very quickly. The Squash control is super fun here: it can create that slightly over-compressed sound that makes drums feel energetic and glued together.

Just don’t go too far.

On the mixbus

This is where I get careful. Very careful.

Invigorate can sound incredible on the mixbus, but a little goes a long way. The goal is to feel the mix get bigger without hearing obvious distortion.

One feature that’s incredibly useful here is the built-in Gain Compensation. It keeps the perceived loudness consistent while you’re tweaking, which makes it much easier to judge what the plugin is actually doing instead of getting fooled by volume increases.

And trust me, we’ve all been tricked by “louder = better” before.
