Mixing & Mastering Tip #193 ·
Does real-time rendering sound different from an offline bounce?
“Real-time render sounds better.”
That’s what a producer friend told me about 12 years ago. I laughed, thinking it was some audio conspiracy theory.
Fast-forward through a decade of mastering work, trained ears and lots of A/B and null testing, and I have to say: he was right.
Well, partially right. Let me explain.
Real-time vs. offline: a real difference

In certain cases, rendering in real time vs. an offline bounce produces a different sound.
Not better. Not worse. Just different.
You might not always notice it, but if you’re using plugin-heavy chains, it becomes more obvious.
Why does this happen?
Some plugins behave differently when they process offline vs. in real time.
Sometimes it’s because of oversampling settings you can manually control. You’ve probably seen those “Render Quality” menus in StandardClip, soothe2, you name it.
But other times, you can’t change anything. Some plugins do this internally with no option to tweak it.
It’s not just about oversampling: I can hear a clear difference in width and even microdynamics.
I’m no DSP engineer, but I have great monitors, a clean chain and trained ears. And when I A/B them, there is a clear difference.
What I do before delivering a master
These days, before I deliver a master, I always:
- Export in real time
- Export offline
- A/B them side by side
Whichever sounds tighter, more open, or just feels better wins.
This doesn’t apply to analog chains
If you’re printing through hardware, this doesn’t matter: the signal is printed in real time either way.
But if you’re deep in the plugin game, it’s worth checking, especially with nonlinear FX or limiters that react to render speed. Do a side-by-side test in your next session.
