Mixing & Mastering Tip #189 ·
Why your drop sounds weaker than the break, and how to fix it
If your drop isn’t hitting as hard as you want, this might be why.
You probably built this massive, lush, wide-sounding break, all cinematic and full of energy. It’s loud, emotional, it fills the whole spectrum… and then the drop hits and suddenly it feels like someone just shrunk the room. Right?
Here’s the thing: if everything before the drop is already maxed out in width and loudness, the drop has nowhere to go.
Your ears are already used to full blast, so when the drop comes in, it actually feels smaller, even if it’s technically louder.
The fix: automate the threshold
Here’s the sneaky move I use all the time:
- Put Pro-C2 on your master (or break bus).
- Automate the threshold down during the break.
- Bring it back up right before the drop hits.
This reduces the perceived loudness and energy of the break, so when the drop hits, boom, the contrast is back.
And don’t worry, you’re not squashing the life out of anything. You’re just taming the dynamics in a musical way. I usually overdo the threshold at first just to hear what it’s doing, then back it off to taste. Subtlety is key here. If it sounds obvious, you probably went too far.
This makes your song feel louder without ever touching your limiter. You’re just reshaping the emotional flow.
Going further: narrow the break
If you really want to go the extra mile, combine this move with a bit of stereo narrowing during the break, and then bring that width back full force in the drop. It creates a wild “explosion” effect that hits even harder.
