Mixing & Mastering Tip #200 ·
How to make a master louder by taming the low end before the limiter
If you’ve ever felt like your track was this close to finished but still didn’t hit the mark, the groove feels weird and the loudness isn’t 100% there, THIS is probably why.
Today we’re looking at a microdynamics technique that can help, and we’re doing it right on the master track.
Fixing the low end
Let’s use Multiplicity for this. Add it right before your final limiter.

Here’s what we do:
- Create a low-pass PRE band and set it around 130 Hz. That locks us into the low end only.
- Attack: around 30-80 ms. This keeps your low-end punch intact.
- Release Slow: start at 200-400 ms. You’ll feel the groove tighten as you slow it down.
At first, the low end might feel like it’s wobbling or shifting weirdly. That’s a sign your release is too fast. Slow it down, and boom: the distortion in the limiter disappears AND the groove locks in beautifully.
Now try finding the right spot for the frequency. Sometimes it’s around 80 Hz, other times it works well going all the way up to 200 Hz.
Adjust Release Fast as well, and voilà.
The mix gets louder, like magic
This part’s wild. Once you control the low end like this, everything else in the mix changes:
- The vocal moves forward.
- The highs feel clearer.
- The whole thing sounds LOUDER.
And we didn’t touch gain or volume at all.
Why it works
Because the low end is what drives the limiter the hardest. If it’s messy or unstable, the limiter freaks out and squashes everything.
Once you stabilize it:
- The limiter breathes.
- The groove feels tighter.
- The whole mix lifts organically.
And that is the key to perceived loudness without crushing your sound.
