Where AI mastering fails: loud and wide, but not musical

Robotic hand reaching toward a human hand on a blue background, AI versus human

If you’ve been paying attention to all the AI mastering hype, here’s something really important: AI has a huge weakness. And it shows up the second you throw something at it that isn’t “by the book”.

When you colour outside the lines

Let’s say you balance your synths in a way that isn’t usual for the genre. Or maybe you want your track to feel warmer than what EDM typically calls for.

Guess what? The algorithm freaks out. Because it’s trained on what’s “normal”, and you, my friend, are not making “normal”.

Who’s right and who’s wrong?

Music is art. You can do whatever you want. You can be weird, messy, or go completely against the trend. That’s the beauty of it.

AI doesn’t get that.

Where AI really fails

After testing a bunch of online AI mastering services (and even the new Ozone 12 algorithm), I can tell you that AI makes stuff loud and wide. But not musical.

It’s missing the point of dynamics, groove, that subtle push and pull that makes a song feel alive. It turns things up, sure, but it kills the vibe. At this point it just makes stuff louder.

The real secret

Mastering isn’t just about loud. It’s about keeping the song breathing while still hitting hard.

That human balance is something no machine has figured out. At least not yet.

So yes, AI might be fun to test. But you can still keep your job for a few more years.
